Device Collection by Internet Explorer version

Microsoft often release security bulletins that are specific to certain versions of Internet Explorer, or you may want to target machines running a specific version for a software update such as upgrading from that well loved favourite, IE6. SCCM allows you to arrange your machines into device collection automatically according to which Internet Explorer version they have installed.

Please be aware when copy and pasting this code you may need to replace the quote marks, as this can cause a syntax error.

You need to create a device collection that describes how you want the machines arranged. For instance, if you want to target machines that are not running Internet Explorer 7 (if you have people running Oracle web based applications that break if you upgrade them for example), then you would need to create an incremental query rule for the device collection. The code for this is below:

select SMS_R_SYSTEM.ResourceID,SMS_R_SYSTEM.ResourceType,SMS_R_SYSTEM.Name,
SMS_R_SYSTEM.SMSUniqueIdentifier,SMS_R_SYSTEM.ResourceDomainORWorkgroup,
SMS_R_SYSTEM.Client from SMS_R_System inner join SMS_G_System_SoftwareFile on SMS_G_System_SoftwareFile.ResourceId = SMS_R_System.ResourceId where SMS_G_System_SoftwareFile.FileName = "iexplore.exe" and SMS_G_System_SoftwareFile.FileVersion not like "7.%"

If you want to target those pesky IE 6 machines, then the query rule would be:

select SMS_R_SYSTEM.ResourceID,SMS_R_SYSTEM.ResourceType,SMS_R_SYSTEM.Name,
SMS_R_SYSTEM.SMSUniqueIdentifier,SMS_R_SYSTEM.ResourceDomainORWorkgroup,
SMS_R_SYSTEM.Client from SMS_R_System inner join SMS_G_System_SoftwareFile on SMS_G_System_SoftwareFile.ResourceId = SMS_R_System.ResourceId where SMS_G_System_SoftwareFile.FileName = "iexplore.exe" and SMS_G_System_SoftwareFile.FileVersion like "6.%"

Following is a list of codes for IE7-10, so you can copy and paste then…
